Treboom Brewery near York are celebrating Le Grand Depart with something special, a Yorkshire saison called Maillot Blanc. The beer is a tribute to the holder of the Maillot Blanc or white jersey, worn by the best-placed rider under 26 years old in the Tour de France.
Available in cask it is also being produced in a limited edition of 500 hand-numbered 750ml champagne style bottles with corks and wire cages.
Having both lived in Paris, owners John Lewis and Jane Blackman have watched the final stage of the Tour de France several times. Jane said, "Seeing the riders race up and down the Champs Elysees is a real spectacle, we can't wait to see it all happening here in Yorkshire".
A 'saison', is a style of beer originally made in French and Belgian farmhouses to refresh the harvest workers. Head brewer John said, 'We've used crushed coriander and lemon peel to create a honey coloured beer with aroma and flavour that really reminds me of being in France'.
The striking labels and pump clips, inspired by 1930s railway and Olympics posters, are the work of York-based United by Design. "They are pieces of artwork in themselves' said Jane, "United by Design have adapted them to make a limited number of silkscreen prints, a souvenir for after the race is over, the beer drunk, and the bottle recycled."
Treboom Brewery will be taking part in 'Cyclism' an exhibition at Gallery Munro House, Leeds. The exhibition runs from June 16th to July 31st with a launch evening on 27th June where Maillot Blanc will be served.
