Earth Day 2021

Today, Thursday 22nd April, is Earth Day: to celebrate we thought we’d let you all know what we here at The Island of Arran Brewery have changed to improve our Green credentials. Last month we released a blog post about receiving a nomination for the Green Business award at this years SIBA Business Awards (for full details click here to read the article). Unfortunately we did not win this year, but that will not deter us from continuing with trying to be be as environmentally responsible as possible.

Late last year we switched from boxed cases to double shrink wrapped cases for mail order deliveries. This has meant slightly lighter packages which take up significantly less room, enabling our couriers to be more efficient when transporting our packages.

We have recently made significant improvements in our brewing and bottling efficiency, meaning we can use the same amount of ingredients such as malts and hops and end up with more beer at the end of the process and less wastage of beer and bottles when we run the bottling line.

With help from Zero Waste Scotland and their Islands Green Recovery Programme we have installed a new growler filler with up to 6 keg lines of beer to enable us to make use of re-usable growlers. We have also switched from shrink wrapped cases to returnable bottle crates for deliveries made to island stockists and stock movements from the bottling hall to the Cladach brewery shop.

We are investigating further environmental ideas, such as the use of shrink wrap made from recycled plastic, and now that things are opening up we are looking to start helping red squirrel charities with the sales of our Red Squirrel Beer. Please feel free to drop us a message through the contact page if you have any ideas that you think may help us improve our environmental impact.
